Lila W. Thompson, A Woman For All Seasons.

Written by: Rev. Donald C. Thompson, PH.D

Read how a New Jersey farm girl, one of sixteen children, became known as "The Mother of the Legislature." Follow her career in politics, election campaigns, service in the New Jersey Legislature and beyond, while nuturing her family and involving herself in lodges, church, and community. Lila was a groundbreaker. She celebrated many firsts at a time when women had just begun to exercise their right to vote. Yet her full of accolades and tributes ended in tragedy.

From the time I was a toddler in New Jersey, I remember hearing stories of my courageous grandmother. Lila W. Thompson. As I grew older those stories came to life for me as I began to understand her goodness and positive effect on others. Grandmother Lila was well known for her many groundbreaking achievements. Although she died tragically before I was born, I have always felt her courageous spirit of caring, perseverance and integrity to be a guiding force in my life.

She became a progressive Republican and true patriot and in 1923 was the first woman for an entire county (Ocean) to be elected to the New Jersey legislature. Lila was the first elected women to have such profound effect on that prominent group.

She support her husband Joseph, in his political career and he supported her as she blazed new trails for women during an era of rampant racism and sexism. She became a statesperson in attaining paved roads and other accomplishments. This exceptional woman continued her career in the public arena, accruing many firsts. She was an advocate for the less fortunate, often exhausting herseld in her zeal to aid others.

Lila will inspire and encourage readers of all ages to fulfill your dreams and goals. In this current era, when there is a dearth of honesty and integrity, we desperately need this role model, Lila W. Thompson, A Woman For All Seasons.
